Over Sea, Under StoneBy Susan Cooper

Theme:
Challenges

Thematic Statement: Finding treasure is a challenge of its own, but keeping it a secret test your will power.

Setting: Cornwall

Point of View:
The Drew Children

Main Characters and a brief description of each:
Simon Drew is the oldest. Jane Drew is the sister of Simon and Barney and the middle child. Barney Drew is the youngest. Great-Uncle Merry is the Drew children's mysterious uncle. Mr. and Mrs. Withers are a couple who are sort of strange and own a yacht. Mr. Hastings is the current vicar and a little strange as well.

Central Conflict and how it was related to the theme: While on vacation in Cornwall, inside a captain's house the Drew children found an interesting map that begins their journey to decode and understand it.

How was the theme developed?: The theme was first developed when the Drew children searched the basement inside the house they were staying in and found a map. Next, they had to keep it a secret but later in the story they tell Great-Uncle Merry. As the story progresses the Drew children discover the map has to do with King Arthur, learn about Trewissick, learn that an ancient text reads of a legendary grail lost centuries ago that's of great power buried with a vital secret, and because of this the Drew children race against forces of evil. They must put together the text and keep it's secret safe until a new champion arises.

If this was a newly selected author would you read another story by him/her? Explain: Maybe, because it took you on a journey to find treasure, but maybe not because I don't like reading books in general.
